A Florida woman had her car stolen Monday morning after offering to help two strangers who claimed they needed to charge a dead cellphone, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred on Welcome Circle in Cantonment on Monday, October 12. According to investigators, a man and a woman approached the victim and explained that they had gone from Lake County to help with local hurricane recovery efforts. When the pair notified the woman that their phones had run out of battery, she offered her vehicle as a charging station.
“A male and a female approached another female, our victim, and stated that they were here doing work,” Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said in a statement. “They’re from Lake County, and their phone had no charge, so the victim says, ‘Why don’t you charge it in my car?’ ” So she put them inside the car, and as soon as she departed, they took off.”
A deputy spotted the vehicle heading south on Highway 29 near West Roberts Road at 9:57 a.m., shortly after receiving a report of its theft. The deputy tried a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over and kept driving south.
The chase ended at the crossroads of Highway 29 and Ten Mile Road, where the stolen automobile collided with other vehicles. Deputies arrested both individuals on the scene of the crash.
Escambia County EMS responded to evaluate a person in one of the other vehicles involved in the crash. Simmons confirmed that there were no significant injuries and no one needed to be transported to the hospital.
The two suspects were identified as Dustin Lee Kelley (30) and Amanda Marie Carr (29). Both were booked into Escambia County Jail on Monday afternoon.
