The FBI is offering up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mary Carole McDonnell, a woman accused of running a multimillion-dollar bank fraud conspiracy in Southern California.
On December 12, 2018, federal authorities issued an arrest warrant for McDonnell in the United States District Court in Santa Ana, California. She is facing federal charges for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Investigators claim that between July 2017 and May 2018, McDonnell carried out a scheme to defraud the Bank of California. During that operation, she allegedly stole over $14.7 million in dollars and property from the institution. Authorities noted that she was aware she had no right to the money and had not reimbursed it.
McDonnell is also suspected of utilizing similar strategies to target other financial organizations. Investigators believe that these additional losses would exceed $15 million, bringing the total suspected fraud to more than $29 million.
To carry out the scam, McDonnell is said to have frequently misled financial institutions that she was the heir to the McDonnell Aircraft fortune. She stated that she was about to inherit an $80 million secret trust fund.
Investigators suspect McDonnell fled the country and is now living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to agency data, she also has ties to Los Angeles, California, and Montgomery, Alabama.
