A 21-year-old Daytona Beach woman was arrested after authorities determined she had posted an online threat to assassinate the president ahead of his scheduled Friday visit to the East Coast.
Allison Albro faces charges of making written threats to kill and unlawful use of a two-way communications device, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators reported that members of the sheriff’s office Domestic Security Unit and the U.S. Secret Service visited Albro’s residence following the post, which was made the night before her arrest. During questioning by law enforcement, Albro maintained that the post was intended as a joke, that she does not own or have access to a Glock or any other firearm, and that she had no intention of harming anyone.
Despite her explanation, deputies booked Albro into the Volusia County Branch Jail.
“We are not going to tolerate threats to assassinate the president,” the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office stated. “Allison Albro, 21, Daytona Beach, is learning that the hard way.”
The agency also issued a stern warning to the public regarding the legal consequences of posting threatening statements online, even when made in jest.
“I would strongly advise anyone else thinking of posting a ‘joke’ along these lines to think twice,” the agency statement said.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that local authorities are actively coordinating with federal agencies to secure the area in advance of the scheduled presidential visit.
“VSO continues to work hand in hand with the Secret Service, FBI and all our law enforcement partners to ensure this presidential visit to Daytona Beach is a safe event for all who attend, and for our whole community,” the agency stated.
