Lane Transit District Launches Rural Transit Pilot

On This Post

Lane Transit District is rolling out a new pilot program aimed at expanding bus service to three rural communities in Lane County.

Cosette Rees, LTD’s regional mobility services director, said the initiative builds on a previous South Lane County program that ended after losing funding. The new pilot restores some service to South Lane while also adding routes along the Highway 36 corridor and in the Mohawk Valley.

“We have so many people who are really needing to have some access, and opportunity to accomplish things like medical appointments, going to and from the grocery store and getting fresh food, even coming in to socialize,” Rees said.

The Oregon 36 shuttle will connect residents in the Mapleton and Deadwood areas to Florence. The Mohawk Valley shuttle will provide service between that community and Springfield.

Rees said riders must contact LTD at least one day in advance to arrange transportation. The pilot launches March 2 and will run through June 30, 2027.

LTD is encouraging riders to share feedback during the trial period. The agency plans to use that input to refine the service and support future grant applications.
