A resident of a Portland safe rest village died Monday evening after their living pod caught fire, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters responded just before 6 p.m. to the North Portland Road Safe Rest Village shelter and found the pod nearly completely consumed by flames, the agency said in a news release.

Crews extinguished the fire, but one resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not released the identity of the victim. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Safe rest villages are city-supported shelters that provide small, standalone sleeping units for people experiencing homelessness.
