A bar employee in Portland, Oregon is recovering from serious injuries after an assault outside the historic Sandy Hut Bar & Lounge left him unconscious and with multiple broken teeth.
Marcos Cordova Meza, 27, had worked as a barback at the venue for nearly two years and said the job had always felt safe despite the occasional late-night crowd. That changed during an incident on Oct. 10, when police say a confrontation escalated into violence.
According to prosecutors, Marchelle Quiana Swafford, 30, punched Cordova Meza in the face while he attempted to help a security guard during an altercation. The blow allegedly knocked him unconscious and caused severe injuries, including eight fractured teeth, a broken jawbone and dislocated mandibles.
Authorities say Swafford, along with Nikiesha Monicks Young, 49, and Daniel J. Jones, 54, were arrested in connection with the incident. Prosecutors allege the three individuals also assaulted a security guard outside the bar.
Swafford faces charges including first-, second- and third-degree assault. Young and Jones have been charged with third-degree assault for their alleged roles in the attack. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Argument escalated into violence
Cordova Meza said the night began like any other shift until a woman—later identified as Young—became upset with staff, claiming employees had cleared away her unfinished food too early.
Two others, identified by police as Jones and Swafford, joined the dispute. A security guard attempted to escort the group outside, and Cordova Meza returned to his duties inside the bar.
Moments later, he saw the guard being struck outside the entrance and rushed to help. He said he was then “blindsided” by a punch that knocked him to the ground.
When he regained consciousness seconds later, he realized the extent of his injuries.
“I didn’t believe it when I saw my teeth on the floor,” he said.
Long recovery ahead
Cordova Meza was taken by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where doctors treated his injuries. He has since undergone dental implants and expects to need additional surgery to repair his jaw.
He says he continues to experience pain when moving his jaw and may face long-term complications.
Cordova Meza has not returned to work as he focuses on recovery. However, he said the Sandy Hut community has been supportive, with coworkers and customers raising money through a benefit event and donations to help cover medical expenses.
The three defendants remain out of jail while awaiting trial.
