A water main break in Portland, Oregon caused flooding and forced the closure of part of Northeast Multnomah Street in the city’s Lloyd District, Portland on Saturday.
Officials said the road between Northeast 11th and Northeast 13th avenues near Holladay Park was closed while crews worked to repair the damage.
Flooding reported across several blocks
The Portland Water Bureau said the broken water main caused flooding across roughly three blocks Saturday morning.
By midday, water had mostly receded from the street, but repairs were still ongoing.
Businesses temporarily lose water service
Several nearby businesses experienced disruptions to water service due to the break.
Officials said Regal Lloyd Center Cinema was without water, and nearby properties including the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland were also affected.
City officials urged residents and drivers to avoid the area until repairs are completed.
Residents warned about possible water discoloration
Homes and businesses nearby may experience temporary water outages or be asked to boil water during the repair process.
Authorities also warned that some customers could notice yellow or brown water coming from taps and advised residents to follow city guidelines for dealing with discolored drinking water.
Crews working to repair aging pipeline
According to the water bureau, the damaged pipe is a 16-inch cast-iron water main installed in 1957.
Repair crews are working to stop the water flow and locate the exact point of the break before beginning repairs. Officials have not yet provided an estimated timeline for when the work will be completed.
The situation remains under investigation as crews continue repair operations.
