Eugene police arrest armed trespassing suspect near Chad Drive

Police in Eugene, Oregon arrested a man Thursday after reports that he was entering residential backyards and checking door handles while carrying a loaded firearm.

The Eugene Police Department said officers received multiple calls on March 12 from residents in the Cape Hatteras Drive area who reported a suspicious person moving through their yards.

One of the callers was a woman who was at home with two young children when the incident occurred.

Drone helps officers locate suspect

Authorities said officers responded quickly to the neighborhood. An EPD sergeant deployed a drone, which helped locate the suspect along Game Farm Road.

Police identified the man as Neil Rory Sharp, 43. Officers detained him and discovered a loaded firearm inside his backpack, according to officials.

Charges and custody

Sharp was taken to the Lane County Jail.

Investigators said he faces several charges, including:

  • Felon in possession of a restricted weapon

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm

  • Two counts of second-degree criminal trespass

Jail records show Sharp remained in custody as of March 13.

Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation.
