A man in Portland has been sentenced to decades in prison after a series of violent stabbing attacks that left one person dead and another seriously injured, with the defense arguing marijuana use contributed to his mental state.
Suspect Sentenced to 30 Years for Fatal and Non-Fatal Stabbings
Antony B. Kassab, 22, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to:
- First-degree manslaughter in the 2023 killing
- Attempted murder in a separate 2024 stabbing
The sentencing was handed down by Christopher Marshall in Multnomah County.
Victims Targeted in Separate Random Attacks
Authorities say the attacks occurred in the Gresham Rockwood neighborhood and involved victims who did not know the suspect.
- Cody Funk was fatally stabbed at a bus stop, suffering injuries to the neck and chest
- David McQuown was later attacked and seriously wounded
Both victims were experiencing homelessness at the time of the incidents.
Defense Argues Marijuana Use Impacted Mental Health
Defense attorney Jason Steen argued that Kassab’s heavy marijuana use contributed to psychological instability and unpredictable behavior.
While Kassab underwent a mental health evaluation, he was ultimately deemed fit to stand trial.
Surveillance Footage Key to Arrest
Investigators relied heavily on video evidence, which showed Kassab:
- Leaving his apartment in disguise
- Wearing a black balaclava and gloves
- Carrying a fixed-blade knife
- Moving through the neighborhood before and after the attacks
This footage helped detectives track and identify the suspect.
Victim Remembered by Family
Funk’s family described him as compassionate and resilient, noting his love for rescuing animals and the hardships he faced in recent years.
His mother said the case has deeply affected their family but expressed relief that justice has been served.
