Eugene Police Launch April Crackdown on Distracted Driving and Illegal Window Tint

On This Post

Police in Eugene are ramping up traffic enforcement efforts this April, placing a strong focus on distracted driving, traffic violations, and illegal vehicle modifications.

Increased Enforcement Across Eugene in 2026

According to the Eugene Police Department, traffic safety has become a major priority this year following a noticeable rise in certain types of crashes.

Officials say patrol officers will be actively monitoring roadways throughout 2026, with each month targeting specific violations. In April, enforcement will center on:

  • Distracted driving
  • Failure to obey traffic control devices
  • Illegal window tint

Strict Rules on Distracted Driving

Authorities emphasized that distracted driving includes any use of a handheld electronic device while operating a vehicle. This applies to texting, calling, navigation, browsing, and other digital activities.

Drivers are only allowed to use devices when safely parked off the roadway. Even using a phone while stopped in traffic is prohibited.

Drivers under 18 are banned from using mobile devices entirely while driving.

Penalties for Violations

  • First offense: Up to $300 (or $265 in county court)
  • If a crash occurs: Up to $500
  • Second offense: Up to $500
  • Third offense: Classified as a misdemeanor

Traffic Signal Violations Also Targeted

Police are also focusing on drivers who ignore traffic control devices such as signals, signs, and lane markings.

Officials remind drivers:

  • Red means stop
  • Yellow means prepare to stop if safe
  • Green means proceed cautiously

Failing to follow these rules can result in fines of up to $300.

Illegal Window Tint Enforcement

Officers will also be citing drivers for illegal window tint, which police say can increase crash risks by limiting visibility of the driver’s actions.

Legal tint requirements include:

  • Front and rear side windows (sedans): Must allow more than 35% light
  • SUVs, trucks, vans: Front windows must meet the same standard, but rear windows may be darker

Violations can lead to fines similar to other traffic offenses.

Options to Reduce Penalties

Drivers cited for equipment issues like illegal tint may qualify for the city’s compliance program. By fixing the issue, they can avoid DMV reporting and instead pay a reduced administrative fee.

Some traffic violations may also be eligible for deferred prosecution through the municipal court, though distracted driving offenses are excluded.

Focus on Safer Roads

Officials say the targeted enforcement effort aims to improve road safety and reduce preventable crashes across Eugene.
