A man from Eugene, Oregon is facing serious charges after authorities say an explosion at a residential property was caused by an illegal drug manufacturing operation.
Explosion Linked to Marijuana Concentrate Production
According to investigators, Derek David Davia is accused of triggering a fire and explosion while attempting to produce marijuana concentrates, commonly known as “dabs,” inside a garage.
The incident occurred in November at a home on River Road, which police say belongs to Davia’s mother.
Hazardous Materials Found at Scene
Officials reported discovering multiple propane tanks, marijuana products, and a strong odor consistent with cannabis when they arrived at the property. These materials are often associated with butane extraction methods, which can be highly volatile and dangerous if not handled properly.
One individual at the scene was injured and required hospitalization.
Suspect Fled Before Calling for Help
Authorities say Davia left the scene before emergency crews arrived. However, he later contacted 911 from a nearby location after sustaining injuries himself and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Court documents indicate that Davia admitted to using butane during the extraction process when the explosion occurred.
Charges Filed in Lane County
Davia has been charged with first-degree arson in connection with the incident, specifically related to the manufacture of a controlled substance. A warrant has been issued for his arrest through the Lane County Circuit Court.
Ongoing Concerns Over Illegal Extraction Methods
Authorities continue to warn about the dangers of unregulated drug production, particularly methods involving flammable gases like butane, which can lead to severe injuries, fires, and property damage.
