A man from Roseburg is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say he fired at vehicles along Interstate 5 before leading officers on a pursuit.

According to investigators, John Deptuch, 57, allegedly shot at several cars Saturday night. He later told authorities he believed the vehicles were following him and said he had been “stoned” at the time.

Troopers with the Oregon State Police and deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office pursued Deptuch’s vehicle into Winston.

Authorities eventually stopped the vehicle using a spike strip and took Deptuch into custody.

Officials say he now faces nine charges, including attempted first-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Investigators reported finding a bag of marijuana, cannabis concentrates known as “dabs,” and a bong inside the vehicle.

One of the three drivers who reported being targeted told authorities a bullet shattered the rear window of his truck and lodged just above the driver’s seat, narrowly missing him.
