Oregon converting OHV site into new campground opening April 1

On This Post

A popular off-highway vehicle staging area in Tillamook State Forest is being transformed into a new campground that will welcome visitors starting April 1.

The Oregon Department of Forestry is redeveloping the Diamond Mill OHV Staging Area into a full-service campground designed to accommodate campers exploring the forest’s extensive trail system.

Officials say the site sits in one of the busiest off-highway vehicle recreation areas in the forest.

According to Ben Burns, recreation facilities manager for the Oregon Department of Forestry, Diamond Mill has historically served as a staging and parking location for riders, particularly those using single-track motorcycle trails.

New campground features and improvements

Crews are currently reconstructing the area with upgrades aimed at improving comfort and privacy for campers.

The work includes placing boulders, soil, gravel and vegetation, as well as reshaping the landscape to create more defined camping spaces and better overnight facilities.

When complete, the campground will include 16 campsites along with several amenities for visitors.

What facilities will Diamond Mill offer?

The campground will feature:

  • 16 camping sites

  • Picnic tables

  • Fire grates

  • Multiple information posts and signs

  • A double-vault pit toilet

These improvements are designed to support campers who come to the forest for hiking, off-road riding and outdoor recreation.

Camping fee and reservations

Camping at Diamond Mill will cost $20 per night.

Officials say campsites will operate on a first-come, first-served basis throughout 2026. Based on visitor feedback, the agency may introduce an online reservation system beginning in 2027.

Opening date for the campground

The Diamond Mill campground is scheduled to open Wednesday, April 1, along with other seasonal campgrounds located throughout Oregon’s state forests.

Outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Oregon Coast region will soon have another camping option close to some of the state’s most popular off-road trails.
