Police: Excessive speed primary factor in Bend motorcycle crash that killed passenger

On This Post

A deadly motorcycle crash in Bend has been linked to excessive speed, according to an update from local police.

The collision occurred Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Southeast Second Street and Miller Avenue. Investigators say the motorcycle was traveling north when it struck a Subaru Crosstrek driven by a Bend resident who was attempting a left turn onto Miller Avenue.

The passenger on the motorcycle, Malachi Longstroth, 19, from Redmond, died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by officers, including CPR, use of an AED, and tourniquets.

The motorcycle operator, a 20-year-old Bend man, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized.

Police confirmed that the Subaru driver stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators.

Authorities say speed played a major role in the crash. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.

Officials continue to remind drivers to follow speed limits and exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies.
