Residents in Bend are raising safety concerns about the increasing speed of e-bikes along popular walking paths near the Deschutes River.
Local resident Amy Fischer said her regular walks with her dog have become stressful due to the constant presence of fast-moving cyclists. She described the experience as crowded and overwhelming, with pedestrians, strollers, and dogs all sharing limited space while bikes pass frequently from both directions.
Although there is currently no official speed limit on these trails, officials note that certain types of e-bikes are restricted. According to Bend Park and Recreation District, only pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted on the pathways, while throttle-powered models are required to stay on roads and designated vehicle areas.
Despite these rules, some residents say speeding remains a problem. Joanie Krehbiel, who operates a bike rental business near the Old Mill District, said she often reminds riders—especially younger cyclists—to slow down and be mindful of others using the trails.
Krehbiel emphasized the importance of basic trail etiquette, such as using bells, announcing when passing, and being cautious around pedestrians and pets. She said these reminders are part of every rental interaction at her business.
Officials with Bend Parks and Recreation echoed these concerns, stressing that shared trail use requires awareness and responsibility from everyone. They warned that higher speeds and inattention can create safety risks for both cyclists and pedestrians.
As trail usage continues to grow, residents and officials alike are calling for more awareness and cooperation to ensure the pathways remain safe for all users.
