Salem police are investigating a death in Aumsville after sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call and exchanged gunfire with a man.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call in the small city just outside Salem on Sunday evening. Authorities did not specify what the reported domestic disturbance involved.

Deputies Benjamin Theodoriches and Ricky Kittleson entered the residence with the caller, who had already left, and encountered 47-year-old Brian Guy Baker, police said.

Police said Baker was armed. Radio traffic indicated that Theodoriches and Kittleson reported Baker fired at them, prompting them to return fire before retreating with the remaining residents of the home. Authorities did not clarify how many others were inside. Police said the deputies and other residents were not injured.

Police said Baker refused commands to come out and surrender.

The county’s SWAT team, along with Oregon State Police, entered the home just after 2 a.m. and found Baker dead inside, according to police. A preliminary investigation indicated Baker died by suicide, though the state medical examiner will determine the official cause of death, police said.
