A pedestrian injured in a hit-and-run crash earlier this month in Portland has died, authorities confirmed, as investigators continue searching for both the driver and the victim’s relatives.
Victim Dies After Hospitalization
Police identified the victim as Edouard Bisimwa Kongolo, 51. He was struck by a vehicle on April 7 at the intersection of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Killingsworth Street.
At the time of the crash, Kongolo’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. However, his condition later worsened, and he died on April 18 while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Driver Still at Large
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the driver involved in the crash fled the scene, and no arrests have been made so far. The case remains under active investigation.
Police Seek Next of Kin
Authorities said they have been unable to contact Kongolo’s family members, who are believed to be living outside the United States. Officials are asking anyone with information about his relatives to come forward.
Tips can be submitted through the department’s online reporting system. Police are also encouraging anyone with information about the crash to assist in the investigation.
Rising Traffic Fatalities
Kongolo’s death marks the 14th traffic-related fatality in Portland this year. Officials noted that five of those involved pedestrians, including two hit-and-run incidents.
