A Kinston man is facing multiple charges after deputies find a firearm and drugs during a traffic stop, according to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred on April 29 while investigators from the sheriff’s Narcotics Unit and patrol deputies were conducting proactive patrol in the area of Highway 11 South. Authorities stated that a car was halted when deputies noticed the odor of marijuana.
During the stop, deputies identified a passenger as Jamie Artis from Kinston. Investigators discovered a 9mm handgun in Artis’ possession. Further inquiry found that Artis is a convicted criminal, making possessing a handgun illegal.
Artis was taken into custody and transferred to the Lenoir County Jail. During the processing, jail workers allegedly discovered a burnt cigarillo containing marijuana in the location where Artis had been.
He faces charges of felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled drug in a jail or prison. Artis is now detained at the Lenoir County Jail without bond.
All indicted individuals are assumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
