A teenager who planned to attack the Phoenix Pride festival in 2024 was sentenced to 1.75 years in prison on Friday.
Marvin Jalo, 18, was arrested in October 2024 on charges that he was involved in an Islamic State-inspired conspiracy to attack the annual LGBTQ+ event in downtown Phoenix.
Jalo has already accumulated credit for 599 days in detention. After his release, he will serve five years of probation.
Jalo was 17 when he was arrested, so prosecutors decided to trial him as an adult.
According to court documents, he was first charged with one crime of terrorism and one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism before pleading guilty to one count of attempted terrorist threats.
Prosecutors said Jalo discussed his plans to bomb the Phoenix Pride festival in online chat forums between November 2023 and May 2024.
A call from a family member about other issues led investigators on his track.
