A 39-year-old woman, later identified as the principal of IDEA Edgemere Academy and College Prep, had been apprehended for DWI in far East El Paso last month, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KTSM 9 News.
Nubia Lizette Salinas was arrested on Saturday, April 18, and charged with DWI. She was freed on the same day, according to jail records.
A deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling the 2100 block of North Zaragoza Road at 2 a.m. on Saturday when he noticed a vehicle heading southbound that was failing to stay in a single lane, according to court filings.
Furthermore, the deputy stated that the vehicle struck the center divider twice and overcorrected when it nearly collided with another vehicle, “making traveling unsafe.”
According to the affidavit, the deputy followed the car to the junction of North Zaragoza and Sun Fire Boulevard, where it ran a red light and turned left while the red arrow was flashing. The deputy then conducted a traffic stop and activated the emergency lights.
The traffic stop was made behind an Alon petrol station at 2100 N. Zaragoza Rd. The deputy stated that he then made contact with the driver, who was recognized as Salina.
According to court records, the deputy described Salinas as having “glossy bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.” The deputy also reported that they felt a “strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath and/or person.”
Salinas told the deputy that she had been drinking at a pub before the traffic encounter.
According to court filings, Salinas initially agreed to take a field sobriety test but then refused.
Shortly after 2:30 a.m., the deputy transported Salinas to the East Montana Patrol Station, where she declined to provide a sample of her breath and blood. The arrest document stated that a search warrant will be issued to obtain a blood sample.
On the IDEA Edgemere Academy and College Prep website, Salinas is identified as the principal.
