A 19-year-old man was detained after secretly recording women using a coffee shop’s lavatory for weeks, according to Winter Garden police.
On Tuesday, cops responded to Axum Coffee on West Plant Street when a lady reported a male in the women’s restroom with his pants down. According to an arrest document, when police arrived, they discovered Brian Larios-Perez in the upstairs women’s restroom.
Officers searched Larios-Perez’s phone, with his permission, and discovered many videos of women using the restroom. The recordings looked to be produced with his phone propped on the floor and aimed toward the adjacent stall. The first video was dated April 3.
The building’s owner informed investigators that he had previously caught Larios-Perez in the men’s handicap restroom near holes in the wall that overlooked the women’s restroom. The owner claimed he had repeatedly warned Larios-Perez to leave the property, but he continued returning.
“You wouldn’t have thought walking in there that would have happened,” one customer outside the coffee shop told News 6. “It is scary. That would make me not want to use any public restrooms again because this happens so frequently.”
Larios-Perez faces one felony crime of video voyeurism and one misdemeanor count of trespassing after warning.
“You can’t trust anybody now,” William Marat said. “Obviously, they are targeting small towns where people come out here feeling safe.”
Marat believes the charges are particularly concerning in a place like downtown Winter Garden.
“Because you’re like a family neighborhood. You get to walk about. “You feel safe,” he remarked. “Your children ride their bicycles. You’re not concerned about some obsessive creeper guy filming or even following you around.”
