A man was arrested following a neighborhood shooting in Central Florida that resulted from an argument involving children.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center recently got a report about a confrontation at an apartment complex when a handgun was discharged. Deputies came and made contact with several witnesses.

The inquiry revealed that the event began while a group of children were playing outside. Another child, who was not in the group, returned home and informed a family member that she was being bullied.

Adults then gathered outside the apartment complex to confront the situation, resulting in a verbal altercation involving several people.

According to local police, during the confrontation, the suspect, 35-year-old Khiry Cole, approached the victim and began a physical altercation. Cole then pulled out a weapon and chased the victim, shooting two shots as he fled, according to HCSO. Nobody was wounded.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Cole. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and discharging a firearm in public or on residential property.

Cole turned himself in at Tampa’s Orient Road Jail and was taken into custody.

“This situation escalated quickly and recklessly, putting lives at risk, including children,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Pulling a gun and firing at someone over a dispute is unacceptable. We will continue to hold those who resort to violence fully accountable.”
