A tranquil Friday night in Montavilla became tense as a man allegedly shot a gun multiple times inside a neighborhood home, sending neighbors fleeing and cops racing in with assistance from their eyes in the sky. Despite the mayhem, no one was injured, according to authorities.

According to a press release from the Portland Police Bureau, police were summoned approximately 8:50 p.m. on Friday, May 22, to the 8800 block of Southeast Ankeny Street after receiving a complaint of rounds fired inside a property. The bureau stated that its Air Support Unit was already in the air and that a Tactical Flight Officer observed a man leap into the bed of a driving pickup and attempt to smash out the cab window before jumping out near East Burnside Street and Northeast 87th Avenue, where officers intervened and captured him. According to police, the driver of the pickup was later identified as the victim, and no one was physically injured.

Ramon Martinez-Diaz, 48, was recognized as the suspect by police. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of attempted second-degree assault, domestic violence unlawful use of a weapon, domestic violence menacing, and felon in possession of a firearm. The county corrections system oversees the booking and custody procedure, as well as the jail where arrestees are processed and housed. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division provides information on the institution and how bookings are handled.

Portland Police thanked the Air Support Unit with giving above play-by-play, allowing ground units to step in quickly. According to the bureau’s ASU instruction, Tactical Flight police are observers who report what they see to police on the ground and assist with pursuits, searches, and planned apprehensions, as outlined in the unit’s operational policy. The Portland Police Special Victims Unit also assisted with the follow-up investigation, according to the agency.

Domestic violence occurrences involving guns pose increased hazards to both victims and first responders. According to a public-health brief from Johns Hopkins University, weapons are used in a significant number of domestic violence-related homicides in Oregon. Under Oregon Public Law, a convicted felon’s possession of a gun is treated as a distinct offense, punishable by jail term and fines.

Police are urging anyone with knowledge who has not yet spoken with police to contact them; the bureau’s announcement includes a tip line and public-information contacts. Neighbors in Montavilla said the late-night ruckus startled them, but they were happy that no one was hurt.
