Authorities in Haralson County say a body thought to be that of a missing man has been located, and a suspect is facing various counts in connection with the investigation.

According to the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office, officers began looking into confidential information about a suspected death on May 22. At the time, deputies were unable to link the information to any active missing person cases.

The following day, family members reported Richard Cash missing, stating that they had not seen him since the evening of May 20. Investigators discovered that the facts provided by Cash’s relatives matched the specifics presented in the prior tip.

The Haralson County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney’s office, spent several days investigating the case before naming Robert Anthony “Bobby” Hill as a suspect.

On May 24, Tallapoosa police attempted to halt Hill’s vehicle, but he fled, leading cops on a chase that was later called off due to inclement weather. Early on May 25, deputies from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office discovered Hill and tried another traffic stop. According to authorities, Hill ultimately stopped, escaped on foot, and was apprehended after a lengthy chase. His girlfriend, Christy Nelson, has also been detained.

Investigators then executed search warrants and conducted a large-scale search operation in the Treat Mountain area, with the cooperation of multiple state and local agencies.

On May 27, a body was discovered just across the Polk County boundary. Investigators believe the remains belong to Cash based on evidence gathered throughout the inquiry, but a positive identification by the coroner’s office is still pending.

Authorities said Hill is facing multiple charges in connection with the case. Nelson was interviewed and then released.

Sheriff Stacy Williams complimented investigators and the agencies who assisted in the search and investigation, stating that their efforts helped Cash’s family get answers.

The investigation is underway.
