A driver is accused of driving while drunk, which resulted in a deadly crash involving a pedestrian in Phoenix’s Maryvale neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
Police were called to the reported pedestrian crash around 2 a.m. near 57th Avenue and McDowell Road, just north of Interstate 10. Officers came to find the victim, Jose Reinaldo Cabrera, 36, gravely hurt and lifeless near the road.
Phoenix firefighters pronounced Cabrera dead at the scene. Authorities suspect that a silver Toyota Camry struck him while he was crossing the road in the middle of the block.
According to investigators, the motorist, Camry Bridges, 27, remained on the scene despite showing symptoms of impairment. Bridges was reportedly driving with her 7-month-old child when the crash occurred.
She was arrested on one count of severe DUI. Police said the infant was unharmed and was released to other family members.
McDowell Road was closed between 55th and 57th drives while police investigated the crash. The road was fully reopened at 7:15 a.m.
