Authorities have discontinued the search for an 11-year-old girl who went missing while out on Lake Erie with a neighbor. The neighbor is now facing criminal charges.

Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong stated Friday evening that personnel have used all available resources in the hunt for missing 11-year-old Toledo child Angelique Cunningham. It comes after officials changed the search mission from rescue to recovery early Friday, doubting she’d be discovered alive.

According to Sheriff Mike Navarre, Kristen Gerrie, 41, of Toledo, has been charged with endangering children in connection with the case.

According to family members, Gerrie is a neighbor. Angelique was said to be in Gerrie’s care Wednesday night.

The two, along with a man later identified as 38-year-old Jonathan Ciha, went for a recreational boat excursion on Lake Erie, according to Lucas County Sheriff’s Office Captain Bobby Chromik.

Ciha was discovered dead in the ocean Thursday morning. A boater discovered his body and contacted 911.

The deputy coroner stated that Ciha drowned, although the causes and manner of death are still being investigated.

According to Navarre, Angelique went missing from the boat on Lake Erie less than 15 minutes after leaving Meinke Marina in Jerusalem Township.

It is unknown what happened on the boat, but the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office said that Gerrie swam to land.

The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office said that she was questioned by investigators on Thursday.

It’s unknown what information she gave investigators. The sheriff’s office said Gerrie was the girl’s caregiver, while Angelique’s family identified her as a neighbor.

On Thursday, the three were rescued from their boat near West Sister Island.

Gerrie was arrested at a Toledo home around 4 p.m. on July 3. She is being jailed under a $50,000 bond.
