An Orlando man was detained on July 4 after deputies said he smashed a U-Haul van into a sign in Altamonte Springs while driving under the influence.
Manuel Anthony Concepcion, 44, was detained following the crash at 900 Pressview Ave., according to a Seminole County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. Deputies said Concepcion was charged with DUI with property damage and DUI with an unlawful blood-alcohol level of 0.15Â or higher.
According to the report, deputies were dispatched to the location around 10:16 p.m. after witnesses reported a U-Haul van colliding with a sign and the driver appearing to be unresponsive.
When deputies arrived, they discovered the vehicle still running with Concepcion in the driver’s seat. The report stated that an empty vodka bottle was discovered on the driver’s side floorboard near the gas pedal.
Deputies reported that Concepcion’s speech was slurred, and they detected alcohol on his breath. According to the investigation, Concepcion told fire rescue crews that he had taken one-fifth of a bottle of vodka.
Witnesses informed deputies that they observed the U-Haul after it hit the sign and that the driver did not appear to be awake.
Deputies stated that Concepcion agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises. According to the study, he had indicators of impairment during those exercises, such as losing his balance, missing heel-to-toe steps, and using his arms to balance.
Deputies said that three breath samples later yielded readings of 0.241, 0.218, and 0.229. In Florida, a BAC of 0.08 is considered impaired driving.
Concepcion was sent to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility. He was also cited for DUI and careless driving, according to the report.
