Surveillance of a police chase involving a stolen ATV gave Michigan State Police with footage of two carjacking attempts that resulted in a violent crash on July 1 in Metro Detroit.
The MSP stated its Trooper 2 helicopter team was assisting Detroit and Troy police with the stolen ATV investigation. During the pursuit, the individual driving the stolen ATV and fleeing from police collided with a van near Gratiot Avenue and Navora Street before attempting to carjack it. The van driver battled off the suspect, while the ATV driver drove away.
A few minutes later, the guy stopped near a parked Jeep Cherokee and took it.
That pursuit took place along westbound I-94, then south on Gratiot Avenue. State police recorded speeds of 90 to 100 mph on Wilshire Drive.
After the Jeep collided with another car on Rosemary Drive, the driver fled in one direction while the two passengers fled in the other.
