Four people were taken to the hospital, and one is being questioned after a shooting Saturday morning in a southwest Rockford area.
Officers were dispatched to the 700 and 800 blocks of Island Avenue at 4:30 a.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. Clifton Avenue was closed for several hours from Lincoln to Illinois avenues.
Police Chief Carla Redd said the incident occurred amid a huge street celebration.
Four female victims were shot, but their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, said to Chief Redd.
“After you leave the clubs, nightclubs, bars, whatever else you’re doing … go home,” Redd replied. “It is not safe.” Especially when 300 or more people take over a block and believe this is an appropriate location to conduct their shenanigans. “It is not.”
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
