A Mapleton man was sentenced to 99 months in prison after pleading guilty to various felony charges coming from connected criminal investigations in Polk and Lane counties.
Jesse Michael Shelton, 45, received a 99-month jail sentence, or eight years and three months, for sex abuse, strangling, firearm violations, driving under the influence, and providing alcohol to minors.
The investigation began in April 2025, when Dallas police apprehended Shelton on suspicion of driving under the influence. During the traffic stop investigation, officers discovered two teenage girls, unrelated to Shelton, in the backseat of his car. The teenagers exhibited symptoms of using marijuana and alcohol.
A search of Shelton’s vehicle revealed a loaded weapon, several rounds of ammo, and various alcoholic and drug paraphernalia.
Information acquired from the teenage victims prompted a larger criminal investigation in Lane County, where Shelton and the victims lived. Detectives from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office worked together to undertake the investigation.
On May 29, 2026, Shelton pleaded guilty in Lane County Circuit Court to two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of strangling, and one count of illegal use of a weapon. He was condemned to 70 months’ imprisonment.
Less than six weeks later, on July 6, 2026, Shelton appeared in front of Polk County Circuit Judge Monte Campbell and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of intoxicants, felon in possession of a firearm, reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a person under 21.
Judge Campbell sentenced Shelton to an additional 29 months in prison, to be served consecutively with his Lane County sentence, increasing his total confinement to 99 months. The judge also ordered Shelton to undergo 24 months of post-prison supervision after being released.
Authorities stated the case was the result of a collaborative effort by the Dallas Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy District Attorney Kaylee Hudson prosecuted the Polk County case, while Erik Knapp prosecuted the Lane County case.
Law enforcement officials involved in the inquiry praised the victims’ bravery and tenacity throughout the investigation and legal procedures.
