A 44-year-old man was apprehended for allegedly entering a victim’s home, taking the keys, and driving off with the victim’s vehicle in far East El Paso, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
On Saturday, July 18, deputies from the Peter J. Herrera Patrol Station were summoned to the 700 block of Cascada Street following a report of a car theft in progress.
While deputies were responding, the victim supplied the real-time location of the stolen vehicle, which was heading north on South Ascension Road into Montana, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies from the East Montana Patrol Station quickly located the vehicle in the 14200 block of Montana and conducted a felony traffic stop.
The driver, 44-year-old Michael Zavala, was detained without incident.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, throughout the investigation, deputies discovered that Zavala reportedly unlawfully entered the victim’s home, stole the victim’s truck keys, and drove away with the vehicle.
Zavala was charged with burglary of dwelling and put into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $75,000 bond.
“The coordination between our Peter J. Herrera and East Montana Patrol Stations was instrumental in bringing this case to a quick resolution,” El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “Our deputies’ communication and prompt response resulted in the arrest of a burglary suspect and the safe recovery of the stolen vehicle. This is yet another demonstration of our dedication to working together to protect our community and hold criminals accountable.”
