Investigators from the Arlington Police Department and the FBI Dallas Field Office have made an arrest in connection with an Arlington cold case homicide from 2012.
According to public records, Mayra Velasquez was arrested on July 16. Velasquez has been charged with capital murder in relation to a January 2012 incident.
According to public records, Velasquez works as a real estate agent for Pure Realtors, LLC. Her license is still active.
She is being held without a bond.
Arlington Police and the FBI Dallas Field Office confirmed that Velasquez had been arrested in connection with the 2012 murder of 32-year-old Irasema Chavez.
Chavez was discovered dead at her residence in the 2700 block of S. Collins Street on January 20, 2012. She’d been stabbed 100 times.
Arlington Police released security footage from the night before Chavez’s murder in 2012 to help identify a person seen entering the apartment, but despite exploring many leads, they were unable to identify a suspect.
During their investigation, Arlington police commissioned a composite profile of the culprit in collaboration with Virginia-based Parabon Nanolabs, but it yielded no clues.
In November 2024, Arlington PD and the FBI Dallas Field Office collaborated on the case, utilizing the FBI’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy program.
In early 2026, detectives made a significant break in the case, which resulted in an arrest.
It is unknown what the break in the investigation was that resulted in the arrest, or what events led to Chavez’s death.
Arlington Police and the FBI’s Dallas office will have a joint press conference on Wednesday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m. to provide additional information regarding the investigation.
