A 76-year-old resident of The Villages was detained following a physical incident over a man’s attempt to renew his driver’s license.
Karen Ann Sharp was arrested Thursday afternoon on a misdemeanor domestic assault allegation at her home on Grant Way in the Village of Belvedere.
According to an arrest record from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the residence due to a disturbance. Sharp said to deputies that she and the victim had argued because he wanted to drive to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew his license. According to the claim, Sharp wanted him to travel with her and wanted him to have a chauffeur.
The man entered the home’s adjacent garage and opened the door to an SUV. Sharp allegedly slammed the open driver’s side door into the man, preventing him from entering. Sharp fell backward into an adjacent wall after the man pulled the door back open. Sharp approached the man again, and he briefly grasped her shoulders before letting go.
The man then exited the premises in a golf cart.
The man then informed deputies that Sharp pushed the door into him, causing him pain. Deputies noticed a raised, superficial lesion to the man’s left arm where the door hit him. They also noticed a bruise on Sharp’s right forearm from hitting the wall.
Deputies found Sharp was the principal offender because she began the physical contact by pushing the car door, did not distance herself from the event, and re-engaged during the altercation.
The nature of Sharp’s relationship with the individual was not disclosed in the redacted arrest report.
Sharp made news in The Villages earlier this summer, when she hit a hole-in-one on June 13.
The Detroit, Michigan native was placed into the Sumter County Detention Center. She was first held without bond owing to the domestic nature of the crime but was eventually released on her own recognizance.
