A high-profile former Supreme Court lawyer has been sentenced to six years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty of tax evasion and lying to lenders, thus ending his career at the pinnacle of the US legal world.
High-Stakes Poker and Tax Fraud Bring Down Top Lawyer
Thomas Goldstein became known as one of Washington’s top appellate lawyers after fighting more than 40 cases before the nation’s highest court and co-founding the popular SCOTUSblog. However, prosecutors said that his professional achievement was accompanied by a parallel life of multimillion-dollar poker games and vast financial misconduct.
According to The Washington Times, a federal judge in Maryland ordered the jail sentence, five years of supervised release, and a restitution order totaling more than $3 million. The verdict came following a trial that ended earlier this year, with jurors convicting him on various counts of tax evasion and false representations on mortgage applications.
According to evidence produced at trial, Goldstein failed to declare huge sums of income over several years, including winnings from high-stakes gaming. He moved money through a variety of channels, including offshore accounts, and claimed personal losses as company expenses for his law firm, according to authorities. This allowed him to dramatically cut his reported income while maintaining his current lifestyle.
Hidden Debts and Poker Losses Lead to Lawyer’s Prison Term
The indictment also alleged that Goldstein disguised huge debts while qualifying for a home loan in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors claimed he concealed tens of millions of dollars in liabilities, resulting in a misleading financial profile for lenders.
Testimony during the hearings revealed Goldstein’s extensive involvement in elite poker circles, where he competed in private games against affluent opponents. According to reports, these games had swings of tens of millions of dollars, resulting in large wins and losses over time.
Goldstein’s lawyers petitioned the court to spare him jail time, claiming that his conduct resulted from a long-standing gambling issue and that he would be better able to repay his debts outside of prison. They claimed that some of the financial abnormalities were due to mistakes rather than fraud.
Prosecutors, on the other hand, offered a different picture, alleging a deliberate deceit to maintain a luxury lifestyle. They claimed that Goldstein was a skilled lawyer who was well-versed in the legal requirements.
The judge sentenced him, saying the offenses were extensive and significant, while recognizing Goldstein’s previous achievements to the legal profession.
