A 25-year-old Kansas City woman has been sentenced for the death of 34-year-old Waleed M. Shaban in 2024.
On Friday, a Jackson County court sentenced Kandi J. Galaviz to 12 years in prison.
Galaviz pled guilty in May to voluntary manslaughter. She was first charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal activity.
According to original reports, just before 1 p.m. on November 14, 2024, Kansas City police officers responded to a reported shooting at Linwood Boulevard and McGee Street.
When authorities arrived, witnesses pointed them to a nearby store where a person had been shot.
According to Kansas City police, a male was located in the parking area of the business with an apparent gunshot wound. He was later declared deceased by emergency responders on the site.
According to preliminary findings, the fatal shooting resulted from a fight between Galaviz and Shaban.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Galaviz asked Shaban to drive her to his workplace, where she then shot him in the chest after an argument.
One witness told police that during the argument, Galavis yelled, “Square up and do something.” The witness then claimed they heard gunfire.
Galaviz reportedly remained on the scene and cooperated with officers before being arrested.
