A 24-year-old man who shot and killed an off-duty Monterey Park police officer during an attempted carjacking in a Downey gym parking lot was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release on Wednesday, officials revealed.
According to authorities, on August 8, 2022, Officer Gardiel Solorio had just parked his car when Carlos Delcid and two accomplices, Gerardo Magallanes and a 17-year-old juvenile, followed him into the L.A. Fitness parking lot.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Delcid approached Solorio with a firearm and demanded the vehicle as he was about to exit it.
Rather than obeying, Solorio moved into reverse and tried to drive away. Delcid then fired five close-range shots before sprinting to a waiting vehicle occupied by Magallanes and the adolescent.
Solorio was pronounced deceased on the scene.
“Having recently graduated from the police academy, Officer Solorio had a bright career ahead of him, where he took an oath to protect others, but on his day off, he was violently ambushed and fatally shot,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement.
