A 61-year-old who lives with his parents in the Village of Springdale is serving a 30-day jail sentence for drunk driving.
This week, Jeffrey Allan Bennett pled no contest in Sumter County Court to a charge of driving under the influence. In addition to 30 days in jail, he will lose his driver’s license for six months, be placed on probation for a year, and be required to conduct 50 hours community service. He was awarded credit for six days already spent behind bars.
The Dearborn, Michigan native was driving around 5 p.m. on June 8 when he was pulled over on Morse Boulevard. A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy began the traffic check after seeing that the car lacked a tag. According to the police record, a later check revealed that the car had no license plate.
When a second deputy arrived on the scene to assist with a driving under the influence inquiry, he instantly noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Bennett had bloodshot, watery eyes and struggled to keep focused when asked to find his proof of insurance. According to the report, Bennett apologized for slurring his speech and informed the officer that he had lately experienced many strokes. Bennett provided two breath samples with blood alcohol concentrations of 0.150 and 0.147, which are nearly double Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
Bennett was previously convicted of DUI in Seminole County in 2013.
