16 People Arrested After Brandon Street Takeover in Parking Lot

A commercial parking lot in Brandon was left covered with skid marks and burnt rubber after authorities broke up an alleged street takeover involving numerous vehicles and spectators.

The incident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, near 9270 E. Columbus Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to troopers, over a dozen automobiles and pedestrians congregated in the private parking area while drivers allegedly performed burnouts, donuts, and other antics.

The FHP’s air team tracked numerous vehicles as drivers fled when law enforcement arrived.

Troopers later blocked the entrances and exits to a nearby commercial complex, causing many vehicles to stop.

According to arrest affidavits, adult drivers detained were charged with illegal racing while taking part in a coordinated street takeover.

Thirteen individuals were arrested on the street takeover charge, while others faced additional charges.

Passengers who were not detained were issued criminal citations, authorities added.

One driver allegedly collided with an FHP patrol vehicle while attempting to flee.

Investigators claimed he and a passenger fled to a warehouse area before being apprehended.

Another suspect was detained for DUI and refused to submit to tests.

A teenage driver was also arrested for allegedly reversing into another vehicle and fled from an officer before being pulled over.

All arrested adults were sent to Hillsborough County Jail.

Florida law outlaws coordinated street takeovers and stunt driving, as well as some actions in parking lots. Authorities continue to enforce the law throughout the Tampa Bay area.
