A teen was apprehended for a dating violence incident in Central Florida.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested the 17-year-old suspect in connection with a severe dating violence incident in which a victim was kept against her will, physically assaulted, strangled, and threatened with a firearm.
Detectives from the Domestic Violence Section recently rushed to a residence in Brandon, near Tampa, and a local hospital after the victim was evacuated for non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the assault.
The victim became involved in a verbal confrontation with her boyfriend, 17-year-old Jai’Keen Barlow, when he displayed a handgun and held her against her will, according to local police.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, he choked, slapped, and beat her with the weapon several times while threatening to kill her and her family members. He also seized the victim’s phone, preventing her from phoning for assistance. The victim had non-life-threatening injuries.
During the inquiry, detectives found the handgun used in the incident.
“No one should ever live in fear of someone who claims to care about them,” stated Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This suspect controlled and terrorized the victim through violence, intimidation, and the use of a firearm. “These are awful acts, and we will continue to vigorously seek those who perpetrate domestic violence while ensuring victims know they are not alone.”
Jai’Keen Barlow was arrested and charged with armed kidnapping, armed false imprisonment, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, battery, battery by strangulation, felon in possession of a firearm (juvenile conviction), felon in possession of ammunition (juvenile conviction), and tampering with a witness. According to the HCSO, Barlow was on juvenile probation for felony firearms charges.
