A 19-year-old man is in the Allegheny County Jail after allegedly assaulting two women and a man in downtown Pittsburgh on Friday.
Police said it’s only the latest in a string of offenses committed by 19-year-old Giovanni Moore over the last few weeks. Moore has been detained and faces numerous counts related to crimes committed downtown, including assaults, theft, and disorderly conduct. Moore has been charged more than ten times in the last month alone, and he currently has 13 active cases, some of which span many municipalities.
The most recent occurred Friday outside of a 7-Eleven on Penn Avenue. Moore allegedly stole cash from a woman before punching her and another woman when confronted. According to investigators, Moore then dragged one of the women down the street before fleeing.
A short time later, police claim he punched a man before attempting to steal another person’s backpack. Moore then fled the area again, but police caught up with him near the intersection of Ninth and Penn Avenue and detained him.
According to police, his alleged crime spree began weeks ago and has occurred on several days across downtown. Moore has yet to make bond and is still being held at the Allegheny County Jail, according to court documents.
A spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Public Safety stated, “We would be remiss if we did not mention that this individual appears to have some significant mental health issues.”
According to a spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Public Safety, Moore was arrested twice in May for possession with intent, but there were no overt behavioral issues at the time.”They became aware of him in early August after arresting him several times on more serious charges,” the statement stated. “That’s when PBP began to work with OCHS and a number of different entities to try to intervene in some fashion and get him assistance.”
When asked why he was freed from jail so many times, Pittsburgh Public Safety claimed the department cannot comment on court rulings.
Moore is currently charged with assault, robbery, forbidden actions, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, open lewdness, harassment, theft, and public drunkenness. He faces multiple counts on some of the charges.
Many people are frustrated by the news that someone can be released from jail and then reportedly commit another crime.I keep my peripheral open almost always, no matter where I am. It no longer appears to be the exception. Andrew Tucker, a Downtown resident, stated, “They go in and out, and eventually do something crazy.”Someone like that is likely to continue doing it. You cannot keep someone like that on the street. I mean, it’s obvious,” remarked John Petron, who works downtown.
