Fire crews were working to contain the Jasper Creek Fire on Weyerhaeuser timberland on Tuesday, Aug. 25, roughly 10 miles south of Cottage Grove, close to where Lane and Douglas counties meet.
Tim Hoffman, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Forestry , the agency that handles wildfires on private timberlands , said the blaze was estimated to cover about an acre.
Speaking at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Hoffman said it “seems like they have it contained,” while cautioning that conditions can shift quickly.
The fire started at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 3 miles east of Black Butte.
Hoffman said the Oregon Department of Forestry dispatched five engines, three helicopters, one air attack and two hand crews to battle the flames.
The same general area saw the Harness 1310 Fire on Aug. 11 , two weeks earlier , which scorched 25 acres and became the largest wildfire in Lane County this season.
Both the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Douglas Forest Protective Association moved quickly against that earlier blaze, sending in engines, bulldozers, helicopters and a fixed-wing plane. No structures were lost and no evacuations were ordered.
