A 22-year-old semi-truck driver from Chicago died in a Wednesday morning crash on I-94 East in Watervliet Township.
Berrien County Sheriff Lt. Josh Sutherland said in a press release that many agencies went to the crash scene at 10:24 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, near mile marker 40. 5.
The 22-year-old was traveling east in the semi-truck when it rolled.
When deputies arrived on the scene, the truck was partially in the median, obstructing both eastbound lanes. Sutherland claimed the cab was entirely enveloped in flames.
The driver was unable to escape the cab and was pronounced deceased at the spot. His name has not yet been released.
The incident caused I-94 East, between mile markers 39 and 41, to be closed for roughly 7 hours. The Berrien County Sheriff’s accident investigation team is still investigating the crash.
According to Sutherland, the truck was transporting bottled water and had no hazardous chemicals on board.
