Waco, TX – The City of Waco will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Barron’s Branch District, marking the start of construction on the first phase of the city’s Downtown Redevelopment Project.
The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the corner of University Parks Drive and Jefferson Avenue.
The 30-acre Barron’s Branch project aims to transform a long-underused area near the Brazos River into a new destination featuring public spaces, recreational areas and opportunities for future development.
The project will create approximately 19 acres of new development space and a signature public park designed to give residents places to gather, connect, play and enjoy the outdoors.
Plans for the district include creekside trails, outdoor plazas, water features, flexible event lawns, an entertainment pavilion and a sculptural pedestrian bridge.
The area will also include spaces intended to support future restaurants, retail businesses and other private development.
The project aims to address longstanding floodplain and infrastructure challenges while creating new connections to the riverfront.
The city called the development a major investment in Waco’s future and said the groundbreaking will mark the beginning of a new chapter for downtown Waco.
The city invites residents to attend the ceremony and join city leaders, community partners and fellow Wacoans in celebrating the start of the project.
