A Claiborne County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Monday morning while responding to a disturbance after a local festival, authorities said.
Terrian Bailey, the fallen cop, was identified by the Claiborne County Coroner.
According to Claiborne County Sheriff Edward Goods, the incident happened shortly after midnight near Highway 18.
When deputies attempted to disperse a large crowd gathered in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store following a local festival, shooting erupted.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), which has taken over the case, said that gunshots were fired at the gathering as cops cleared the scene.
Deputy Bailey was injured by gunshots and sent to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. A female bystander was also shot during the event and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
Sheriff Goods stated that details about what led up to the shooting are scant, and investigators are working to determine whether Bailey was the intended target.
At the moment, no information about suspects or suspected motives has been revealed.
MBI agents are now analyzing the crime scene and collecting evidence. Once the preliminary investigation is completed, the bureau will submit its findings to the local District Attorney’s Office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for consideration.
