Police say a teenager who was caught on camera kicking in the front doors of a north Phoenix home as part of a viral social media fad has been arrested.
Around 6:30 a.m. on September 12, Phoenix police said officers were dispatched to a residence near 44th Street and Thunderbird for reports of criminal damage. Two people were caught on tape at the front door, with one kicking the doors open before they escaped in a red Ford truck.
The suspect caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the residence, and police believe the crime was related to the “Door Kick Challenge,” a growing social media fad that encourages young people to record themselves forcibly kicking front doors of homes.
According to investigators, the suspect shown on camera kicking the doors is a 14-year-old boy. Additionally, authorities report that the red pickup involved in the crime was stolen from Scottsdale.”Detectives also discovered additional evidence linking the subject to another stolen vehicle,” police stated.
On September 13, the teen was detained and put into a juvenile jail center. He is charged with criminal damage and unlawful use of transportation.
The suspect was not named due to his age. It is unclear whether the second person in the video is in custody or will face any charges.
