Eleven people in their late teens were shot overnight Sunday at a park in Georgia, according to law enforcement.
According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place at midnight “at a large gathering” in Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, approximately 85 miles southeast of Atlanta. The sheriff’s office identified the injured individuals as four 18-year-old men, two 18-year-old women, and five 17-year-old boys.
Authorities reported that two of the casualties, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, were in severe condition. The others were in stable condition.
The gathering seemed to be a birthday party scheduled to take place at an Airbnb in Jones County, but the host forced the group to leave, according to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis. According to Davis, the group comprised numerous teenagers from adjacent Central High School and Northeast High School.
After the birthday party participants gathered in the park, another group arrived, and an argument between the two groups turned into shooting, Davis told reporters at a news conference.
Davis noted that all of the victims were partygoers, and that he “can’t remember the last time we’ve had this many people shot at one time.”
No arrests have been made, and the inquiry remains ongoing.
Because of the large number of persons involved, the FBI is aiding with the investigation, although Davis stated that everything information so far indicates that the incident is local.
