A husband and woman were detained Sunday afternoon after being spotted driving with suspended licenses at The Villages’ entrance on County Road 466A and Canal Street.
A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy initially stopped a black 2017 Nissan Frontier driven by Lady Lake resident Emily Carmela Lima Spriggs, 29, because the vehicle’s registration had lapsed. Spriggs was the sole occupant, and she admitted she was aware that her license had been suspended. She told the deputy she couldn’t afford to remedy her license suspensions or pay for motor vehicle insurance. She was arrested on allegations of driving with a suspended license and without having motor vehicle liability insurance.
As a tow truck arrived to retrieve the Nissan, Spriggs’ husband, 31-year-old Juan Gabriel Figueroa-Montanez, approached the traffic stop in a 2009 Scion XB. He pulled over in the travel lane and asked the deputy if his wife was being taken to jail.
The deputy recognized Figueroa-Montanez’s name as the registered owner of the Nissan Frontier. A records check revealed that his driver’s license had also been suspended due to numerous unpaid traffic violations. Figueroa-Montanez stated he realized his license was suspended, turned off the Scion, and handed over the keys to the officer. He was arrested for driving with a suspended license.
Both husband and wife were booked into the Sumter County Detention Center. Spriggs was released after posting a $1,500 bond, while Figueroa-Montanez was released after paying a $1,000 bond.
