5 people arrested after man beaten for defending unhoused person in Madison

Five people were arrested after attacking a man, who stopped a group of people from harassing an unhoused person, the Madison Police Department announced Thursday.

According to police, officers responded to the intersection of North Carroll Street and West Washington Avenue at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to authorities, officers discovered the victim bleeding and with multiple injuries.

Police explained that the victim intervened when a group of men surrounded an unhoused person.

The man was repeatedly hit and kicked, and one individual put him in a chokehold, authorities said.

The attack was captured on public surveillance cameras, and a witness gave police a snapshot of the suspect’s vehicle.

Officers pulled over the vehicle at East Washington Avenue and East Springs Drive.

The five suspects were apprehended and brought to the Dane County Jail.

Riley Joseph, 18, was charged with disorderly conduct, significant battery, and strangulation.

Dylan Vail, 21, was arrested for disorderly conduct and party to a felony involving severe battery.

Aaron Burr, Bryce King, and Tanner Cox, all 18 years old, were charged with disorderly conduct and significant battery.
