Lake County man detained after allegedly pointing gun at cars in Apopka

A Lake County man was detained Wednesday morning in Apopka after deputies claimed he pointed a loaded gun at passing cars while walking down the road.

George Edwards Stone, 52, is charged with aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and improper use of a handgun.

According to an arrest record, a Sheriff responded to West McCormick Road at 9:28 a.m. after receiving reports of an armed pedestrian on the road. The deputy discovered Stone with a firearm in the parking lot of a nearby Circle K.

Stone obeyed directions, dropped the gun, and was apprehended without additional incident.

A driver told authorities that she was on her way to school with her grandchildren when she noticed Stone waving a rifle at her car while it was stopped at a traffic light. She reversed to get more space between herself and Stone, then witnessed him firing the firearm at other drivers before dialing 911.

Deputies say the weapon had one round in the cylinder when it was reported stolen in Lake County in December 2025. Stone claimed he owned the rifle for roughly two months and had shot it into the ground multiple times earlier that day in an unnamed area.
