A man was detained after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies discovered hundreds of pounds of suspected stolen copper wire and other alleged stolen goods at an illegal auto dismantling yard in Compton, police said Friday.
Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Bureau executed a search warrant at the company in the 400 block of East Pine Street approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators According to LASD, evidence suggests that the company was intentionally collecting stolen copper and other nonferrous metals.
During the search, officers recovered several hundred pounds of suspected stolen utility and telecommunications copper wire, according to authorities.
Investigators also found bronze statues, plaques, and catalytic converters on the site.
The company owner, identified by LASD as 53-year-old Gregorio Roberto, was approached at the scene and detained on charge of receiving known stolen property, a crime.
The Compton Sheriff’s Station, Compton Fire Department, Compton Code Enforcement, and Compton Public Safety all provided assistance to the Major Crimes Bureau.
According to LASD, reported thefts of utility and telecommunications wires, catalytic converters, public statuary, fire hydrants, and other nonferrous metal-containing products have increased in recent years as precious metal prices have risen.
Authorities warn that theft of power and telecommunications wiring can impair public safety communications, hospitals, government facilities, and residential homes.
